South West Counselling Service Killarney, Co. Kerry: Healthy Sexuality workshops to Post Primary School Students in Kerry area.

South West Counseling Service (SWCS) based in Kilarney, Co Kerry delivers Sexuality workshops to post-primary students in the Kerry area. The 4 hour long workshops cover topics such as sexual identity,  sexual health (contraception and STIs), consent  in relationship, the influence of pornography, etc. Using a range of methodologies, SWCS delivers a workshop that is highly engaging and which addresses pertinent issues in the lives of young people.

We also offer a junior cycle ‘Healthy Sexuality’ programme and we offer workshops on LGBTQ awareness in post primary schools.

Training for those working with young people in non-formal settings

There are a number of sexual health training courses available for youth workers and those working with young people:

HSE– Foundation Programme in Sexual Health Promotion

A 10 day Foundation Programme in Sexual Health Promotion is facilitated nationally by HSE Health Promotion & Improvement Departments. This is a comprehensive foundation training programme for professional and voluntary service providers who wish to develop their confidence, skills and knowledge in the area of sexual health promotion.

There is no participant fee as it is currently being covered by the Health Promotion & Improvement Department in partnership with the HSE Sexual Health and Crisis Pregnancy Programme.  See below for information on your local course.

Foróige: Real U Programme

The Real U (Relationships Explored and Life Uncovered)  is a personal development and sex education programme aimed at equipping young people with the skills, knowledge and confidence to develop healthy relationships and delay the onset of early sexual activity.

The training provided is a two day training  on the use of the manual. It is an interactive training where participants get the opportunity to facilitate activities within the manual during the training. Those attending the training should have a level of facilitation skills necessary to role out the manual to groups or individuals.

The Real U manual  has been developed as a way of exploring a number of relevant topics with young people including puberty, body image, relationships, boundaries, emotional well-being, reproduction, sexuality, contraception, and sexually transmitted infections. It is designed to be used with young people aged12-18 years in group work setting.

National Youth Council of Ireland

The b4udecide.ie/Leave it Till Later Training and accompanying resources will explore the concept of delaying early sex among young people.  Training for youth workers on this resource is offered by the NYCI.  Enquire directly with them on 01 4784122 to arrange a course.

HSE South: Squashy Couch Adolescent Sexual Health Programme, Training for Trainers

This training is delivered over 3 consecutive days and is specific to adolescents. It includes a 6 week sexual health programme for adolescents, which has been designed for young people based on their stated needs. The course is provided by the Squashy Couch Adolescent Health and Information Project jointly funded by the HSE South and the Crisis Pregnancy Programme.

HIV Ireland:Lets talk about Safer Sex

Four-day training for trainers programme facilitated by Dublin AIDS Alliance which runs one day per week for four weeks.  The primary aim of the programme is to train youth and community workers to deliver HIV, hepatitis, and sexual health education programmes to the groups in their care.

The Sexual Health Centre in Cork provides a two day training programme for youth workers on sexual health and drugs.  The content and duration of the course can be adapted to the needs of participants.

IFPA Sexual Health Training

The IFPA offers a sexual health training programme that covers the basics of reproductive and sexual health. This course is suitable for anyone who wants to know more about sexual health or service providers such as teachers, carers, youth workers and HSE staff. The session can be tailored to the needs of the participant group.

The next Sexual Health Training Course takes place every 6 months.

AIDS Care Education & Training Ireland

ACET (AIDS Care Education & Training) Ireland offers sexual health training to youth workers across Ireland. ACET’s specific area of expertise is in working with faith based organisations (FBO) in developing sexual health policy and practice. There is a fee for this training although work with migrant-led and ethnic minority faith communities may fall under funded projects and be free of charge.
